The Most Expensive Cars In The World For 2017

No matter how old we get we all love our toys and the rich are no different. Super-cars, many of which are too fast to be even road legal have become the ultimate toy for the elite. Many of the cars on this list are just that and all are above the sacrosanct $1 million USD mark, putting them well above the reach of mere mortals. By mere mortals here we also mean professional athletes and mega lottery winners as well, both of whom would struggle to afford some of these cars.

10. Koenigsegg Regera- $1.9 million

The cheapest car on this list is also one of the fastest. The Regera, whose name literally translates to reign/rule, has a 5 liter twin-turbo V8 engine augmented by 3 electric motors giving it an eye-watering 1822 horsepower. Oh, and did we mention that it is exclusive too? There were only 80 units ever made.

Quick Facts About The Richest Man On The Running Track

If after seeing the headline of this article you guessed that we would be talking about Usain Bolt then you are 100% correct. The big man with a trademarked pose (‘To Di World’) is the highest earner in Track and Field history, making a whopping $34 million per year. What makes this figure even more remarkable is that his race winnings only add up to $2.2 million over the course of his ENTIRE career.

Perhaps after hearing some of the sums earned by stars in NFL, Basketball or Football that doesn’t seem like a lot to you, but trust us it is.

The context for this figure comes in the fact that it is a massive 10 times higher than the next highest paid athlete! As far as we can tell this is the biggest pay differential between professional athletes ever.

Our proof is here- at the height of their stardom, Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan (two truly dominant players of their respective sports) only earned a ‘meagre’ triple the amount of the next highest paid player. If that isn’t enough perspective for you then let’s put it this way. His salary is 20 times greater than the average for sprinters.

So right about now you are probably wondering how Usain Bolt got to be so well paid right? Well here’s how.

Firstly there is his sheer dominance to consider. Bolt was the first man ever to win an Olympic Gold medal in the 100 and 200 meters twice in a row, and he went on to do it a third time as well. He has set world records a number of times and has significantly raised the bar in the world of sprinting.

There is also his big personality and ‘star power’ to take into account. Bolt earns from one appearance fee than most professional sprinters will earn in an entire year. His personality is so big that he sells out entire stadiums almost on his own. Most of the record ever event attendances can be traced back to Bolt’s participation in the meet.

Finally, all of this when aligned to the fact that Bolt has never been involved in even a hint of off the track controversy has led to Bolt earning himself some massive endorsement contracts. His deals with Visa, Hublot, Sprint, and Virgin Media all earned him big bucks. He was also given his own flavor by Gatorade- the Gatorade Bolt Lemon-ice.

None of these deals however, compare to his deal with Puma which is worth more than $10 million per year and is set to run right the way through to 2025, a full 8 years after he is scheduled to retire. This deal from a company he has been with for his entire career, earns him more than stars as big as Cristiano Ronaldo earn from Nike. His other global endorsements are all worth $1-4 million, which though may seem small in comparison to his Puma endorsement are still are still life changing amounts of money for most of us. In addition to this Bolt also has seven regional sponsors that he partners with.

It’s not just sponsorships that make Bolt his money though. He has recently started his own shaving company known as ‘Champion Shave’. In addition to his huge personality and the attention he draws to each and every single one of this races Bolt commands huge appearance fees. Each appearance he makes worldwide typically earns him a minimum of $400,000 which certainly adds up considering that he normally runs at least 8 of these races per year.

All in all it’s easy to see that Usain Bolt by being himself, working hard and enjoying what he does has changed the face of track and field, both on the track and off it too.

A Quick Look At The Most Expensive Seat In The Air

First class on planes has always been luxurious and has gotten increasingly so (and increasingly expensive) over the years. However, in spite of all these advances there still isn’t much that can compare in luxury, or cost with the ‘Suites’ class available with Singapore Airlines flights on the New York to Singapore route. Available since 2008 on their flagship Airbus A380 with tickets costing $18,400 USD it certainly isn’t a cheap way to fly, but what your money buys you can only be described as decadent.

When you arrive at the airport in Singapore you will be taken to what is known as ‘The Private Room’, so exclusive that even 1st class passengers are not allowed to see the inside. Here you will be treated to as much gourmet food and as many premium drinks as you can stomach before boarding. It won’t be any ordinary boarding though as Suites passengers have their very own jet bridge allowing you onto to plane without any hassle so that you can enjoy the amenities on-board for as long as possible.

Once on board the plane you will be taken to your suite which was designed by the French luxury yacht designer Jean-Jacques Coste and seated in a plush leather armchair which was hand-stitched by an Italian master craftsman. Once seated you will be brought champagne and a goodie bag to keep you interested as you wait for take-off. The goodie bag itself is a work of art and comes with a Salvatore Ferrragamo amenity kit with a full sized bottle of cologne. The headphones are made by Bose and everything else is from Givenchy, blankets, pillows, slippers pajamas, everything!

Once you are settled you can enjoy their world class entertainment system which has a seemingly unlimited amount of movie choices, TV shows, music etc. After take-off the food and drink services starts up with gusto and you can chose from between premium drinks and world class cocktails, to gourmet teas and coffees. The dinner consists of a number of choices ranging from 5 to 7 courses. If that isn’t good enough for you then you can take advantage of Singapore Airlines’ ‘Book the Cook’ programme which allows you to choose what you want from an extensive list ahead of time.

Once you are fed, watered and ready to relax for the night then the staff will come and turn your chair into a luxurious bed for you. There are no reclining half seats, half beds here! If you are travelling with someone or lucky enough to have the suite next to you empty, then the partitioning wall can be removed so that you can either have a double bed to yourself or share it with your partner. If there is enough free space on the Suites deck in that flight, you could even have a double bed each! The staff in the Suites cabin are extremely friendly and willing to do whatever it takes to give you the best flight experience possible.

The flight from Singapore to New York has a stop-over in Frankfurt where guests of the Suites cabin can disembark the plane and recuperate from all that luxury in The Senator Room. Here they have access to hot showers and another gourmet restaurant, just in case the food provided by the plane wasn’t quite up to scratch.

All in all, we believe that this is one of the most opulent and expensive flights available short of going private. The interesting thing is that this offer has been available for around 10 years now with only small changes. Given the recent advances in technology, we are excited to see what Singapore Airlines comes up with next when they decide the time for innovation and more decadence has arrived!

This remote location gives its guests the feeling of complete disconnect, allows for spectacular views of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. With no major towns or light sources around, the night skies here are crystal clear providing spectacular views.

While this hotel is not cheap with rooms starting from an impressive $200 per night, it is also not that expensive for a luxury hotel. This is due to its remote location and some of the hardships that come with staying in an ice hotel (it is quite literally freezing!!)

There are a number of things apart from the remote location and views that make this hotel so unique and exotic however. First off, everything, and we do really mean EVERYTHING, within the hotel is made from ice. This includes the chairs, beds, glasses, bars etc. All the ice is locally sourced from the nearby Torne River. There is even a chapel within the hotel for guests who wish to be married in a spectacular, haunting, sub-zero and unique setting.

In order for all of this to be maintained, the hotel is kept at a positively frigid -5 degrees Celsius on the inside. As a result of this,  guests must sleep inside polar tested sleeping bags, which some may find a hardship, but to us sounds cozy. There are also saunas and hot tubs outside to help guests warm up after the cold of indoors.

In keeping with the theme of uniqueness the hotel has 100 rooms, of which no two are the same. Each room is designed by an artist who must first submit their plan to a special jury who decides each year what should be built.

The same thing happens with the hotel. Each year when spring comes and the temperatures rise the hotel is allowed to melt. This means that the hotel is rebuilt completely each year with a completely different design! Architects queue up to present their vision to the jury who choose the design of the hotel for the coming season. Guests can come again and again and feel like they are getting a different experience each time because it is almost quite literally a new hotel.

In an attempt to stay ahead of copy-cat hotels that have sprung up since its creation, ICEHOTEL has constantly renovated. Recently it has opened a new hotel next to ICEHOTEL called ICE365. This is the world’s first year round ice hotel, which in keeping with ICEHOTELs environmentally friendly ethos, is kept cold using solar panels making use of the extremely long days that the region has in the summer months.

If you’ve got money to spend, as nothing about this place is cheap, and an adventurous soul then this place is definitely for you. Everything about it is individualized and intended to go in harmony with the natural surroundings. All of this makes it in our opinion one of the most unique and exotic resorts in the world.

Bohemian Crystal For Private Yachts

Tucked away in a picturesque town near the point where Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic meet, Crystal Caviar specialises in making bespoke crystal glass features for private yachts and bigger cruise liners, and these include chandeliers, decorative glassware, crystal furniture and towering sculptures.

Bohemian crystal has long been a byword for quality and craftsmanship but walking into the Crystal Caviar showroom in Sluknov is like stepping into a contemporary art museum, albeit one housed in an 18th century church. Vast swirls of glass designed to mimic the movement of water sit side by side with complex optical illusion sculptures and great hunks of crystal that change colour with the light.

Marek Landa launched Crystal Caviar in 1995 when he started producing engraved glassware for hotels. This soon expanded to custom-made chandeliers and sculptures, and before long he was partnering with a number of renowned Czech artists and glassware specialists to create pieces that blur the line between interior design and art.

“Glass and crystal are such beautiful materials and it is always a privilege to work with them,” says Landa. “The beauty of glass is unique and that is why I fell in love with it. It is also an extremely luxurious material to create art with. I love art and now more than 70 renowned artists produce their art pieces in the Crystal Caviar premises.”

One of the artists Landa works most closely with is Vlastimil Beránek, whose output includes the world’s biggest sculpture made from a single piece of glass. His signature is the fluidity he manages to bring to his sculptures that are reminiscent of the movement of water, a wisp of smoke or the way a leaf flutters in the air.

His ‘Ocean’ series in particular has been applauded for the way it captures that perfect moment in a wave’s arc just before it crashes to the shore, while the ‘Smoke’ collection recreates the momentary airborne sculpture created by an extinguished match — but 2.3m-high and made out of topaz crystal.

His work is usually made bespoke for his clients, starts at €100,000 and requires six months to complete. Beránek’s signature is glass and crystal but he is happy to expand this to topaz, rose quartz and even bronze if certain outdoor temperatures are better suited to a metal-based design.

Together Landa and Beránek bring their work onto many of the most extraordinary yachts on Earth. Landa knew that yacht owners were too worried about the vibrations from ship engines and the natural movement of the sea to invest in chandeliers or sculptures — and that this was limiting their interior options. However, he saw a way around it and, using his technical expertise, created anchors for sculptures and chandeliers that allowed them to withstand a high level of turbulence.

“We’ve built more than 100 seaworthy chandeliers on many yachts and even more sculptures,” he says. “Crystal Caviar is considered to be the expert in building chandeliers that don’t rattle and that are safe and can last for years. And, so far, we haven’t had to repair a single chandelier or sculpture on a yacht, although we have been called in to replace ones made by other companies many times.”

Another artist Landa works closely with is Jan Frydrych, who has combined his striking optical glass structures with a lifelong passion for clocks to create a series of glass marine chronometers that start at €500,000. Made out of violet, deep blue or even pink Bohemia glass, they weigh up to 70kg and his signature thin laminations cover a timepiece made by top German clockmaker Erwin Sattler. These marine glass chronometers are utterly unique and fit more easily into contemporary yacht design than the weighty, wooden creations of the past.

Frydrych, who works out of a pale-pink house near the Polish border that dates back to the 19th century, spends up to 10 months on each chronometer, gently layering the glass to create the maximum optical impact. “When I am working, I put a lot of thought into how the chronometer will look through the layers of glass,” he explains. “But for the clock itself, I leave the technical details to Sattler. The movement needs to be absolutely precise and perfectly balanced, and much as I love clocks, he is the expert, not me.”

So while the Czech Republic may be a landlocked country in the heart of northern Europe, locals trained in the centuries-old art of glassmaking are busy transforming the interiors of glamorous vessels on far-away oceans, bringing a touch of Bohemian glamour to the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas.
